The four year old filly had amazing lines, of that there was no denial, but when it came to her performance on the track she had not shone. In her twenty-four races she had won only three and as she entered the new year she had found herself moving from Star Thoroughbreds, where she had always raced, to a new home. Silver Stride Stables were able to look past the filly's shortcomings and give her another chance on the track. The next year would dictate her future, whether she would continue to race or go to brood, but this year her place was clear. Could she turn her career around in the year ahead? The staff at Silver Stride Stables were convinced she could, and they would be working hard to make it so.
Red-headed Jacob had asked to ride Amira. He felt he could help to push the filly into the top three and that together they could be strong. Plus, he was sure that Alexia would not mind him taking the filly on when she already had the likes of Sunny to deal with at similar distances on the same surface. So Matthias had agreed and together they walked the bay filly toward the track.
"Remember, Jacob, she will have experience and maturity over most of her competition. You need to learn her, and she needs to learn you. Trust her, guide her but don't change her." Matt's lectures were really begining to both the red-headed jockey, who did little more than nod and make encouraging noises at the right time. "Oh, and don't forget... Even though she doesn't know it yet this year is her big chance. OK?" Jacob nodded as they pulled the filly to a stop. "Matt, I have this. I'm not an idiot. Just go with the flow already." he pulled himself atop the filly and stroked her neck. "Let's get her gated, then we can actually get this show on the road."
They took her over to the gate and loaded her with little more than a minor hiccup and the blonde trainer went to sit in the stand, leaning back in his chair as the gates opened. He watched as the bay filly moved out at high speed, as she moved with conformation to rival that of Mona, and as she held her head high. Each stride was elogance, firm and well thought out. Jacob at atop her well and allowed her to run at her own pace until they reached the corner when Jacob showed her the whip. He didn't use it, he just showed it, and she sped onwads. Her speed increased a little, though not much, and you could see her fighting for the post, passing it with ease.
Yes, they could make something of this filly. There were no doubts.
